Homeschool Letter of Intent: A Guide for New Families

Homeschooling is becoming a more and more popular choice for education. I think this is due mostly because of the lack of safety in school and the current classroom culture. Whether you’re just starting to consider homeschooling or have already made the decision to do so, one of the first steps you’ll need to take is to write and send a letter of intent to your local school district or state education agency. I’m here to explain the steps and give you a template for writing your letter of intent.

What Is A Letter of Intent?

A letter of intent is a legal document that notifies your state’s educational department that you intend to educate your child at home. It’s an important document that sets the stage for your homeschooling journey. A letter of intent (LOI) includes important information about your student and your homeschooling plans. It’s worth noting that since education regulations are determined at the state level, the terminology and requirements for the Intent to Homeschool Form can vary significantly from state to state.

Depending on your location, the form may be called a “notice of intent,” “notice of enrollment,” “declaration of intent to homeschool,” or “letter of intent.” Some states also require additional documents, such as a signed affidavit or curriculum plan, and may require homeschools to register as private schools. HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) website is a great resource to find your state.

Where Can I Find The Form?

You can typically find information about the Intent to Homeschool Form on your state’s Department of Education website. Some states may even provide the option to submit the form online, while others may require that you submit a hard copy of the form to your local school superintendent.

If you’re having difficulty locating the form or determining how to submit it, you may be able to find helpful resources through homeschooling organizations or alliances. And if all else fails, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local school district for guidance.

When Must A Letter of Intent To Homeschool Be Submitted?

The submission deadline for the Intent to Homeschool Form can vary depending on your state’s regulations. In many cases, the form must be submitted at least two to four weeks prior to the start of the public school year in your district. Additionally, certain states have established specific date requirements, such as August 15th. To avoid missing a deadline, it’s crucial to begin the submission process as soon as possible.

If you are pulling your child out of public school in the middle of their year, the letter of intent must be turned into the school district as soon as possible.

PRO TIP: If you are turning your form into the school district or board of education in person, take 2 copies of the form and have BOTH SIGNED. The first copy is for the school district and the second copy is for your personal records. It’s not uncommon for your letter of intent to get lost or misplaced by the school district. If you are mailing your letter of intent, then I highly recommend getting a return receipt. A return receipt provides the sender with proof of delivery including the recipient’s signature along with information about the delivery address.

How Often Does A Letter of Intent Needs To Be Submitted?

The requirements for the submission of the Intent to Homeschool Form can vary from state to state. Some states may require the form to be submitted on an annual basis. While others may only require it to be submitted in the first year of homeschooling for a family. You can check all the requirements on the HSLDA website.
